Rwanda’s climate change initiatives to benefit from IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Trust
Thursday, 26 January – President Paul Kagame on Wednesday received Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director on her three-day working visit to Rwanda and held discussions on ongoing fruitful partnerships. The IMF boss commended Rwanda’s commitment to fighting climate change and being the first African country to access the IMF’s financing facility to build resilience to climate change.
Rwanda is the third country world-wide alongside Costa Rica and Barbados, and the first African country to successfully access funding under the Resilience and Sustainability Trust. Rwanda secured US$ 319 million highly concessional financing to advance efforts in building resilience against climate change.
During her stay in Rwanda, Ms Georgina interacted with Rwanda’s senior Government officials on climate financing and ongoing climate mitigation and green projects. She also held discussions with green entrepreneurs as well as young environmentalists participating and contributing to climate reliance initiatives on climate change challenges and available opportunities.
Ms Georgina also participated in a round table discussion with regional Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors on current economic challenges and climate change. They also discussed the new IMF Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) and how it can support regional countries address climate change challenges and enhance pandemic preparedness.
