Kigali WINS Bloomberg Global Mayors AWARD
The City of Kigali is among 15 cities worldwide awarded for designing an innovation that will serve the interests of communities.
The award includes one million dollars as well as technical support and coaching for three years aimed at bringing to life the project presented.
The winning project on rainwater-harvesting technologies will provide an alternative water source and a smart waste solution to contribute to green and resilient recovery in Kigali’s informal settlements.
The City of Kigali is rapidly developing in all aspects including city infrastructure, waste management, greening, cleaning and beautification, and housing development both for commercial and housing purposes.
The recently launched Early Childhood Development Centre located within City Hall provides comprehensive services for children of staff. Car-free days introduced in 2016 have become a highly anticipated recreational event where Kigali residents walk, run, and cycle for a healthy lifestyle.
The Bloomberg Global Mayor’s Challenge is competition that supports and spreads cities’ most promising ideas. Bloomberg Philanthropies invests in 941 cities and 173 countries around the world to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people.
